PHYSICAL HEALTH

A number of things, in addition to food and physical activity, affect our health (stress, lack of sleep, smoking, etc.). Everyone is different. Today's decisions affect our health today, tomorrow, and beyond. Only we can figure out what is right for our lifestyle, but these decisions start with having the right information.

Holy Healthy Changes is about making “changes” that will enhance your life and health. It’s not about denying yourself.

It’s about choices. The food and physical activity choices we make every day affect our health. The more we know, the better choices we can make.

It’s about balance. We need to learn to make more room in our lives for things that make us happy, healthy, and productive.

It’s about a healthy lifestyle. To get the most out of our lives starts with small steps - a slow, steady approach to being healthy that we can live with each day.

Being healthy comes down to taking care of ourselves: what we eat, how much we eat, and how much physical activity we get. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans from the US Department of Agriculture will help us:

Eating right and being physically active may reduce your risk for heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, osteoporosis, certain cancers, and being overweight or obese.
Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2005

Healthy Eating

Learn what is really involved in healthy eating. Calories, nutrients, and food groups are all important in weight control and healthy living.

Active Living

Physical activity simply means movement of the body that uses energy. Walking, gardening, briskly pushing a baby stroller, climbing the stairs, playing soccer, or dancing the night away are all good examples of being active. For health benefits, physical activity should be moderate or vigorous and add up to at least 30 minutes a day.

Living Healthy

Water is critical to our health. Sleep is important to our health but scientists don’t know why it’s so important to survival. Nicotine is a poisonous, addictive chemical found in tobacco and alcohol prevents nutrients from being absorbed and causes malnutrition but we still choose to use these substances. Learn more about living healthy and making healthy choices.
