Holy Healthy Sunday: January 27th, 2008
On Sunday, January 27th, churches around the Arkansas Conference
united in celebration of Holy Healthy Sunday. Designated
by the Conference as the official kick-off of the new health and wellness
resource it has created, this Sunday was an exciting event of inspiration
to Methodists across the state.
If your church was not able to participate in the "official" kick-off date, it's not too late! Schedule your own "Holy Healthy Sunday", and let us know what you are doing. Here are some ideas to use:
- A Healthy Potluck -use HolyHealthyUMC.com as a resource for healthy recipes and guidelines for eating healthy. Publicize where your members can find ideas for healthy cooking prior to the event.
- A Church Picnic - complete with family relays, sack races, egg relays, and other family fun games. Encourage members to prepare healthy picnic lunches, and come enjoy the fellowship and activity!
- A Bike Hike - find a safe route for biking, and meet Sunday afternoon for an exhilarating ride!
- A Health Fair - contact your local health department, hospitals, etc., to check on availability of personnel to do health screenings, such as blood pressure, BMI, cholesterol, etc. Invite health professionals to offer classes, question/answer sessions, exercise events, etc. Invite a nutritionist to speak on healthy eating. Offer nutritional snacks and drinks to participants.
- Sign Up For Health - provide a “Holy Healthy Sign Up” during or following worship services to allow members to sign up if interested in exercise classes, healthy cooking classes, family play groups, etc. This information can then be used to plan future programs your members are interested in.
- Topics for Worship Service - invite a health professional in your congregation to speak briefly on a health topic during worship services. Ideas for topics: raising healthy families, how to choose a doctor, treating depression, the importance of exercise, how to cope with stress, and healthy hearts. Get creative!

Holy Healthy Events at Annual Conference 2008
There are some exciting new events being scheduled for Annual Conference
2008 in Hot Springs. The buzzword is "Holy Healthy", and these
events should create quite a stir!
Holy Healthy Awards: Watch this space for information about the new Holy Healthy Awards to be given at this Annual Conference. This new distinction will be awarded to churches developing exciting and effective health and wellness programs that support the 7th Vision Initiative.
Run/Walk: Yes, you heard it here first. . . we're having a Run/Walk! One morning of Annual Conference you will be given the opportunity to participate in an exhilarating trek through beautiful Hot Springs with other members of the Conference. Details of this event will be posted as soon as it becomes available. Just don't forget to pack your sneakers!
